VISTEC Hosts Successful Safe Handling of Chemical Reagents Workshop

On 6 September 2024, VISTEC successfully hosted a "Safe Handling of Chemical Reagents Lecture and Workshop" by Fujifilm Wako. The event was well-attended by the VISTEC community, particularly our new students.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Fujifilm Wako, GK Finechem, and Professor Makoto Ogawa for organizing this valuable event for our community. The lecture provided our students and researchers with essential knowledge on safety regulations used in Japan and internationally, as well as safe practices for handling hazardous chemicals.

Additionally, participants had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on workshop on the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction using an experiment kit from Fujifilm Wako. This widely used cross-coupling reaction is crucial in synthetic organic chemistry.

The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction has gained significant recognition, with Professor Akira Suzuki being awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010. The workshop offered our community two key benefits:

1. PPE Training: Participants learned how to properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) for chemical experiments.

2. Practical Experience: They gained hands-on experience performing the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction using a simplified experiment kit.

At VISTEC, safety is a top priority. We encourage our community to embrace a safety-first culture by providing valuable knowledge through events like this lecture and workshop.
