Research Ranking

VISTEC Research Excellence - recognized by SIR, Nature Index, and CSRankings

VISTEC research excellence is consistently recognized through the world-class research and innovation rankings, including the Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR), Nature Index, and CSRankings.

Why does VISTEC use these rankings?

As a small-sized, graduate and advanced research institute for Science and Technology founded in 2015 by PTT Public Company Limited, VISTEC utilizes the Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR), Nature Index, and CSRankings to monitor and exhibit its research quality and international impact. These 3 international ranking systems help VISTEC attract partnerships and funding, guide strategic development, and enhance global reputation as a leader in science, technology, and innovation.

SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR)

VISTEC – The Most Innovative University in Thailand (Year 2025)

Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) has been ranked #1 in Thailand and #127 globally in the Innovation category of the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2025—marking the fourth consecutive year that VISTEC has led the nation in this category.

About SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR)

The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a globally recognized evaluation system developed by SCImago Lab, a research organization based in Spain. Operating since 2009, SIR provides a comprehensive assessment of research institutions worldwide based on performance across three key dimensions:

  • Research Performance
  • Innovation Output
  • Societal Impact

To be included in this world rankings, institutions must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of 100 peer-reviewed publications annually indexed in Scopus
  • At least 75% of publications must receive citations in the same year

Understanding the Innovation Ranking

The Innovation category—in which VISTEC ranks #1 in Thailand—evaluates the degree to which an institution's research contributes to technological advancement. It is based on data from the PATSTAT database of the European Patent Office (EPO) and includes the following indicators:

  • Innovative Knowledge (IK): The number of scientific publications cited in patents
  • Technological Impact (TI): The proportion of research output referenced in patents
  • Patents (PT): The number of patent applications (simple families) filed

These indicators reflect how well an institution’s research translates into real-world, patentable technologies—highlighting practical impact and commercial potential.

Innovation with Impact

Though founded only a decade ago, VISTEC has proven that excellence is not limited by age or size. The institute was established with a clear mission: to focus on cutting-edge research and high-impact innovation that addresses global challenges and industry needs. This vision has enabled VISTEC to maintain its #1 national ranking in Innovation for four consecutive years, competing successfully with much larger, long-established institutions nationally and internationally.

Our Commitment and Goal:

  • Providing excellent education and conducting cutting-edge research, leading to high-impact discoveries and proprietary innovations.
  • Enabling close collaborations and linkages between our talented researchers and industry.
  • Fostering entrepreneurship opportunities: Creating the path from research into usable innovations and then into commercially viable and scalable products.

This achievement not only highlights VISTEC’s unique position in Thailand’s higher education landscape, but also underscores our contributions to global technological advancement.

Count = A count of one is assigned to an institution if one or more authors of the research article are from that institution, regardless of how many co-authors there are from outside that institution.

Share = An institution's Share takes into account the percentage of authors from that institution and the number of affiliated institutions per article. For calculation of the Share, all authors are considered to have contributed equally to the article. The maximum combined Share for any article is 1.0.

VISTEC Ranked Among the World’s Leading 200 Young Universities

The “Leading 200 Young Universities” are a ranked list of the top 200 research universities worldwide that are 50 years old or younger (established between 1975 and 2025), ordered by their article Share for 2024 in high-impact scientific journals.

VISTEC was ranked 165th among the world’s Leading 200 Young Universities in the Nature Index 2025, based on 2024 Article Share and Article Count, which are key indicators used to assess institutional research contributions.

What is CSRankings?

CSRankings (CSRankings.org) is a metrics-based ranking system that evaluates top computer science institutions worldwide based on research output in premier conferences. It leverages publication data from DBLP and focuses on faculty-centric analysis by aggregating papers published in top-tier venues across various subfields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, systems, and more. The rankings highlight research excellence and offer a field-specific view of academic strength in computer science. Inclusion in CSRankings requires that faculty be full-time, tenure-track, and able to solely advise PhD students in Computer Science. Faculty names must appear as listed in DBLP. The platform also provides links to each faculty member’s homepage, Google Scholar profile, DBLP page, and detailed publication record, making it a valuable tool for assessing institutional performance based on high-impact research contributions.

Our Positioning

In 2025, VISTEC was recognized by CSRankings as the leading institution in Thailand for computer science, reflecting its strong research output in top-tier conferences. The institute also achieved an impressive 87th place in the overall Asia ranking. This distinction highlights VISTEC’s growing reputation in advanced areas such as AI, robotics, and systems research, and its commitment to producing high-impact, internationally recognized work in the field of computer science.
